Casteism...what casteism...?!

I remember when I was in college ie NIT Calicut, I was having this conversation with a friend of mine in Guwahati. The topic moved to eligible bachelors etc etc. Then she mentioned, she will definitely marry an upper caste Hindu. These scheduled castes and scheduled tribes dont have any brains or merit...

My late grandmother used to tell me...Baba, kayasta e biya korbi de...beleg jaati r suwali nanibi (Son, marry within the Kayastha caste only, dont bring a girl from another caste)

I myself am not clean. I remember discussions I had with my friends on how someone I knew got through IIT JEE after attempting just 29 marks...just because he was an ST (Hills).

One of my friends here in WIMWI once told me...Bataas...tujhe pata hai xxxxx SC hai

I am against reservations in their current form and more importantly there form of implementation. Earlier I used to be against reservations in general, but over the past 3-4 yrs, I have come to beleive that there is a need for reservations. But its not reaching the right people.

But then this post is not about reservations. Its about something much more profound...something too far more heinous...casteism

Was shown this documentary in class today...on casteism...untouchability
People...learned people...supporting it...
There was this person who was on the cover of Time Magazine and was the Physics prof of some univ...he is openly supporting it
Then some of the Hindu "learned" gurus making statements like...
Shudra pair hai...brahmin sar...khastriya haath...ab pair ko chot lagegi to haath uski madat ke liye jayega hi na...(Shudras are like legs...brahmins are the head...kshatriyas are the hands...if the leg gets hurt the hands would definitely go to its help)
He also went on to say that...trying to get over the caste system is like asking one to walk on one's head

Then there were these Rajputs in some part of Rajastan...who openly proclaimed that they made sure that the lower caste people were "taught a lesson" whenever they defied the maryada of the society. An 80 yr old harijan would have to address a 10 yr old Rajput as master...else that old dalit would be "taught a lesson".
They...the upper caste people...said...Its important to maintain the fear in the hearts of the Dalits...else they forget their maryada.

And this is not just in Hindus. In Muslims, there are an equal number of castes and there is discrimination based on those. The upper caste Syeds, Pathans and Khans discriminate against the lower castes. Same for Sikhs. The Jats look down upon the Dalit sikhs like Mazhabi Sikhs.
In Christians, its the same.

We are branding people for something they have no say in. Was it that child's fault that he was born in a Dalit household?
In the faint hope of equality, so many of the Hindu dalits converted to Chirstianity and Islam. But even there, the dream of equality eludes them.

Every religion...has in its roots equality as one of the pillars...but with time...people "add" strata to the society which passes down generations and generations...
Manu, better known as "Maharishi" Manu came out with his set of "Laws" which have become Shastras for us Hindus. It was in these shastras that casteism found its first mention.
Here are few of his "Laws"

Let (the first part of) a Brahmana's name (denote something) auspicious, a Kshatriya's be connected with power, and a Vaisya's with wealth, but a Sudra's (express something) contemptible.

A Brahmana who takes a Sudra wife to his bed, will (after death) sink into hell; if he begets a child by her, he will lose the rank of a Brahmana.

For he who explains the sacred law (to a Sudra) or dictates to him a penance, will sink together with that (man) into the hell (called) Asamvrita.

I have nothing to say...nothing at all

well, the same "shastras" also say this - janamh jaayate shudrah; karmana jaayate brahmanah.

Im sure you understand sanskrit.

All I want to say is, maybe, something started off as an honest attempt to bifurcate jobs and has ended up as something really messy as uve pointed out.

(out of context - @ the comment on the blog - those couple of lines were not meant to be a sher - but since you've called them that, thankoo, flattered.)

welcome (for the thankoo :o))

i agree n disagree
why i agree...there ARE many customs which started off as an honest attempt at something

however, how can..at any point of time...a person be discriminated by giving him a contemptible name, by not letting him educate himself, by confining him to outskirts of society and spitting upon him

i dont understand

visit one of the matrimony portals to understand how the caste system has wrapped the society....no one wants to marry their child into another caste....and marriage portals even claim to have 255 castes registered on their websites!!!

Anurag, its so very true...we look down upon them knowing very well that if they did not exist the world would have been a filthy mess....

Believe me, with me too it has happened that I have rejected marriage proposals from lower castes, so I would not talk on this issue 'coz I believe in the saying : "first practise then preach"

I feel bad about it, but the fact is that I DO IT, good that I could get a forum where I could confess something like this...

hey...welcome to my blog :o)

thats the biggest problem u see...we practice it...n we dont even realize that we are doing it...for us its just something that is meant to be...we dont find anything out of place...

n ofcourse u can confess to all ur crimes here :D :D...but then i guess crime is too strong a word

Even people who label themselves as strong advocates of equality indulge in this kind of discrimination.. Try searching for a house in good residential localities in b'lore... The house owner, however well educated he is , asks for religion / caste and all that .

@ajith
isnt it amazing that all of us have incidents to corroborate this fact

i have faced this discrimination..though not against me...when we were searching for a house in kormangala...the landlord was a retired government officer

During my younger days I think I probably was a little more sensible by not surrendering to such ideas, but now my mind does revolve around casteism at times.
And sadly,I see most people around me(of my age group) developing similar attitudes.

hmm, I agree to your reply.
Castesim is a major issue. Discrimination is wrong; but somehow, Im unable to reconcile to the fact that we need to give the so called "lower" (i put that in inverted commas cos I dont believe neone is lower or higher) castes are to be given 49.5% reservation in premiere colleges; its a murky issue; I have my opinions on it , but not on a comment space, it will probably take up a complete blog to voice all of them.
and oh, there's the gender issue to add to this also.. huge mess, seriously a definte mess.

u r arpz right...

yes...as i mentioned...i am against reservation in their present form...after independence the mandate was to do away with reservations in 10 yrs...now its never gonna happen

but i beleive reservations should be "implemented" not keeping in mind caste or religion or anything...it has to do with economic deprivation n social discrimination

again its a very utopian idea n i dont know how we are goin to implement it...but that is what i beleive...

maybe bright minds like u...n not so bright ones like me :D...if we sit together...we can come out with a solution n then propose it to the govt...who is anyway going to shoot it down...coz for them...its political suicide :D

Replace caste with class and the problem still persists.

Replace it with first world and third world countries and the problem still persists.

I think it is in human nature. The need to discriminate and form a hierarchy of haves and have nots.

Even if class, caste and race were to be eradicated, other social and economic structure will be formed to divide the society.

Not that I think that justifies discrimination.

I usually am clueless about the castes of my friends until they make a big issue about it.

I remember reading alot about caste in encyclopedias. And other sources.

For the sake of preaching, every one preaches a lot..equality and such stuff but when it is related to them (so called higher caste people) the rules dont apply. They have different rules for themselves and these rules have divided the society long before civilization came into being..!!..Nice post !! :)

umm to some point u were right...let's not behave as if there's sm1 untouchable or something...
but then hatred for 1 always leads 2 hatred towards the whole group...imagine u lost a seat in sum prestegious insti nd sm1 of the reserved category(be it sc/st or even d defence nd all quotas) u wud do nethng 2 change d rules...nd that's whr u start hating d system...
right?

besides i can c many ppl wid views..nd evry1 supportin u..bt mostly evry1 acts as a hypocrit nd wen it cums 2 practicing such no1 does! its bad...
:(

@sach
yup...we do act in conflicting ways...esp our own wants are on the line

but a few points

u said lets not say there is any untouchability or so
beleive me...there is...widely prevalant across india...lesser in some regions of the country...like the east ie north east...but widely present in the north or west or south

if i were affected...yes...i would cry out foul...n i still do...n i am not ashamed of it...coz i beleive the way reservations have been "implemented" is wrong...its not reaching the right people...i dont see any point in giving reservations to the SON of a person who is a high govt official...true the official might have faced discrimination n on his own he rose up...so HE deserved reservation..NOT his son

n i guess that goes for most of us...many of us beleive that some form of protection is necessary for the lower priviledged...but how do u do it...its an open question

btw...thanks for dropping by :o)

3:48 PM
Blogger Sach1 said...

hey don't u think its more of a fault of d person who takes such priveleges ...i hav frends who are themselves from good family bt may belong to sum category nd even if they dnt take undue adv of reservations they r still blamed nd badly tr8td..thats whr my mind contradicts my hrt nd that internal conflict arises....
:)
anyways i feel its 1 issue u hardly have solutions to...
